This fiesta in a bottle is a Mexican liqueur made from the blue agave plant. There are four basic types of tequila: silver, gold, rested, and aged. Silver tequila is clear and has a lighter taste; gold tequila has added caramel coloring and oak tree extract flavoring. Rested tequila has been aged at least two months in oak barrels, while aged tequila rests in barrels for at least one year.
A great margarita depends on the quality of its ingredients; always use the best tequila you can find. The light clean taste of quality silver tequila preferred.
Among the top finds are: Anejo Tequila Lapiz, which has a bit of a peppery taste; Porfidio Anejo, reminiscent of a good robust wine; and Patron Silver which is another excellent choice.
For the moderately priced option, we prefer Sauza Giro.
